A story about small spaces with big ideas.
Capsule hotels originated in Japan in 1979. Originally, they catered exclusively to men and were a direct response to Japan’s intense “work hard, play hard” corporate culture.
They allowed white-collar “salarymen” to avoid expensive taxi rides after missing the last train home and offered a simple, clean, and cheap place to sleep and grab a fresh shirt before returning to the office.
The world’s first capsule hotel, the Capsule Inn Osaka, opened in 1979. The concept was inspired by the Kisho Kurokawa’s futuristic Nakagin Capsule Tower in Tokyo. Throughout the 1980s economic boom, the concept spread to every major urban center in Japan.
